LGD's 'deuterium OLED' major transformation... Exceeding the quality limit

79 2022.01.04

LG Display declared a generation change of organic light emitting diode (OLED) TV panels with new technology. By applying a new material to the core material, the luminance and stability have been greatly improved. The OLED panel generation change is the first in last 10 years.

On the 29th, LG Display announced 'OLED.EX', a next-generation OLED TV panel technology that significantly improved picture quality with deuterium and a personalization algorithm. This will be applied to all TV panel series from the second quarter of the new year. OLED.EX panels are differentiated from existing OLED panels with △deuterium material △personalization algorithm △thin bezel. For the first time in a TV panel, LG Display changed hydrogen, a major component of OLED devices, to deuterium. Deuterium is twice as heavy as normal hydrogen, so it realizes a high-efficiency device that emits brighter light with a stable structure. The durability of the device has been dramatically improved, so it can maintain bright light for a long time.

Machine learning (ML) based personalization algorithm technology developed with in-house technology was also applied to the OLED panel. It predicts the individual usage of 33 million OLED devices (based on 8K resolution) by learning the user's viewing type. By precisely controlling the amount of energy input for each element, images can be realized more precisely and natural colors can be expressed. Appropriate power is applied to more commonly used elements among red, green, and blue (RGB) elements and the image quality is maintained stably. LG Display explained that it improved the screen brightness by 30% compared to the existing OLED with deuterium and personalization algorithm technology.

The panel design was also improved. The panel bezel has been reduced by 30% through innovation in OLED manufacturing technology. The bezel is made as thin as 4mm on a 65-inch, which was 6mm.

From the second quarter of the new year, LG Display will apply OLED.EX to OLED panels produced at their factories in Paju and Guangzhou, China. They already completed investment in deuterium replacement facilities together with their partners. Chang-ho Oh, head of LG Display's large business division (Vice President) said, "There were factors that increased the cost of facility construction, but the price did not increase compared to existing panels through cost-effectiveness."

LG Display's strategy is to solidify OLED's position in the premium TV market with new technology panels. LG Display’s OLED TV panel sales were about 200,000 units in the first year of mass production in 2013. It has recently surpassed about 20 million units accumulatively and continues to grow rapidly. Vice President Oh said, “Even though the overall TV market this year was about negative 12% growth rate compared to the previous year, OLED products grew by about 70%,” and he continued “through evolution of OLED device, algorithm, and design, we hope to provide differentiated customer experience to our consumers.”
